While the results are impressive, the method is not. The majority of the weight loss and waist reduction is due to being sick for the past two weeks.

Health update

My last couple of weeks have been rough.

On Friday, March 28th I had two couchsurfers from New Caledonia staying with me, Thierry and Eugenie. They, Dylan, and I went to dinner at a vegetarian buffet. We all ate pretty much the same things, except that I also had plain white rice and they didn't.

Around midnight I woke up with pain in the pit of my stomach. I went to the bathroom, where I spent the majority of the next six hours vomiting and having diarrhea. Something was in my body that needed to get out.

The bathroom is right off the living room where Thierry and Eugenie were sleeping, so this was quite an uncomfortable situation. However, I was so sick and weak from all that vomiting that I couldn't care much. I probably got one hour of restless sleep that night.

The next morning Thierry asked if I needed to go to the hospital. I told him if I vomited again, then yes I would go. However, after around 6am I no longer threw up; however, I still had the diarrhea.

Dylan took the couchsurfers out to entertain them while I rested at home. I managed to get a little sleep, but I kept waking up because of the constant diarrhea. And man, did my throat burn from all that stomach acid coming up.

Dylan and the surfers came back in the late afternoon. I thought that I was improving. After eating some toast, however, I started vomiting again so I decided I needed to go to the hospital since I was very weak and suspected that I was getting dehydrated. The surfers, who had rented a car, took Dylan and I to the hospital because Dylan had drunk some alcohol during their outing and didn't want to risk driving.

hospital 3-29-14I was so weak and dizzy by this point that the hospital visit is kind of a blur. They hooked me up to an IV and administered medicine and fluids. At the beginning I really didn't care if I died or not (although I wasn't close to dying), but after a couple of hours my energy came back and I left the hospital with a three-day prescription.

On Sunday Thierry and Eugenie left, then later that day Catherine and Juno arrived, a couchsurfing couple from China. I was still weak and only eating toast, rice, and sports drinks, and I still had the diarrhea, but thankfully no more vomiting. I figured my body would adjust itself by the time I left for my mini vacation on Thursday.

Thursday I went to Taoyuan, where a group of friends and I would leave for Malaysia on Friday morning. I had much more energy, but still had watery diarrhea. My appetite had come back, and since I was now on vacation I didn't eat as lightly as I should have.

I enjoyed Malaysia very much, despite my stomach issues. However, Monday night after coming home, I again suffered from terrible stomach pain during the night, which finally eased enough to go to sleep after an hour of passing nothing but water through my bowels. I think not being careful with what I ate in Malaysia was the culprit.

So by today, Tuesday morning, I've had watery diarrhea for ten days, as well as mild to sharp pain in my mid-gut almost every time I eat. Later today Dylan will take me to the doctor, where I pray I'll find the means to start feeling normal again.

Got violently ill late Friday night: Constant vomiting and diarrhea for 6 hours. Saturday morning and afternoon no vomiting but continued diarrhea. Saturday evening vomiting again, light-headed, so went to the Emergency Room and got treated for dehydration.

It's now Wednesday morning and I still can eat only lightly; I've consumed only about 600 calories a day since Saturday. Hopefully my appetite will come back before my trip to Malaysia on Friday.

I've managed to lose weight and inches, but I would never recommend the food poisoning method. Ugh!

Starting a diet & exercise (again!)

In an effort to lose this fat I've accumulated around my midsection, last week I started to diet and exercise again. Actually, the diet is counting calories.

Current weight = 80kg   ➨  Goal = 75kg
Current waist   = 97cm  ➨  Goal = 87cm
Exercise
                      ➨  Goal = 30 minutes 4X week

I'm using MyFitnessPal.com to track my calories, and my Nike+ sports band to track my speed walking.

Half Marathon Training Week 6: Wet and Wild!

Not only am I back, but I'm back with a vengeance!

Today I ran 10k in the pouring rain. I loved it—the "crazy guy" looks from passers-by huddled under their umbrellas, the cool rain on my face that prevented overheating, and the satisfying sense of accomplishment.

I began my run at 2:15. I vowed not to look at my watch again until the end. When I finished 10k I checked, hoping for a time of 90 minutes or less. My watch read 3:22.

Sixty-seven minutes? Is that even possible?!

I had to double check my route mileage. According to Google maps, my route is 850m. I ran it twelve times. Yep, that's 10.2k.

Still not convinced, I used Google maps to check the distance on a different path that I run, a park bicycle path that has official mileage signs. That route is marked as 1.5k. The result on Google? 1.5k.

Wow. I really did it!

By the way, I was reading my tape measure wrong after week 1, so the waist measurements weren't correct until today.

Half Marathon Training Weeks 4 & 5: Complete failure

First, let's get the excuses out of the way. Cold, rainy weather…check. Christmas and New Years holidays…check. Spending too much time on Facebook and the Internet in general…double check!

The result: Not a lick of running for two weeks. Writing that is almost as embarrassing as posting my gut photo.

OK, so it's a new year and time for renewed action!

Kronk Shoulder AngelWhen my final class ended last night at 10:00pm, a nagging voice in my head told me that I should run when I got home. But the little devil on my other shoulder told me that it was already so late, and the weather was too cold, and I hadn't eaten dinner yet, and besides, tomorrow I'd have more energy….

Faced with this dilemma, I turned to my coworker Nick, who's also training, for some words of encouragement and motivation. I can't really remember what he said now, but whatever it was it did the trick. As soon as I got home I quickly changed into my running gear and bolted out the door, careful not to turn on the PC, grab a snack, or do anything else that might stop me.

I assumed that, after two weeks without any running, I would have lost the endurance that I'd built up. Surprisingly, I hadn't. In fact, I ran my best time since the beginning of training.

Instead of my usual 3 minutes run/2 minutes walk routine, I jogged 800m, no matter how long it took, followed by 1 minute of walking. After 35 minutes I wasn't completely exhausted and felt that I could continue for quite awhile longer. However, since I was out of practice I stuck to the 35 minutes as indicated in my schedule. Just knowing that I could have continued gave me renewed motivation and more assurance that it's definitely possible for me to complete the 21k in less than 3 hours.

I've added another column below—Minutes per Km—as an aid to track my progress.

Half Marathon Training Week 3: Personal Best

For the first two weeks it took me 30 minutes to run/walk 3 km, using the 3r/2w (3 minutes running/2 minutes walking) ratio.

On Saturday, I changed my ratio to 4r/1.5w, and I ended up going 6 km in 40 minutes, or 20 minutes to run/walk 3 km. And it didn't kill me!

endurance run

After week one I was doubting my ability to finish the 21 km half marathon in less than 4 hours. However, in these past 3 weeks, I can actually see my endurance increasing, which gives me hope at this point of finishing in less than 3 hours.

Half Marathon Training Week 2: Back on Track

I had a little setback at the end of week one: A combination of heavy rain, wind, and cold weather prevented me from my scheduled run on Saturday. No matter; I can make it up on Sunday.

I spent Sunday with friends, which included playing three rounds of Settlers of Catan. It didn't include running. Oh well.

So, although this is technically week two of my training, I followed the week one schedule again. I'm still doing the 3 minutes running/2 minutes walking cycle.

I'm proud of myself because I can see a bit of improvement: At the beginning it took me 60 minutes to go 6 kilometers; last night, however, I completed 6.5 km in 57 minutes. Of course, at this rate it would take me 3+ hours to complete 21 km. By next March I should have that time shaved down considerably.

Strangely, my weight increased by 1 kg, but my waist shrank by 3 cm.

Half Marathon Training Day 2: Rain

I'm proud of myself. I got up at 8:00am and went running in the rain. It's only the second day of my training and I am not going to give up because of some water falling from the sky.

I felt self-conscious for a while, but I remembered that I was doing this for myself, not for anyone who looked at me from under their umbrella like I was a fool. During my run I crossed paths with just one other runner; seeing him lifted my spirits incredibly and kept me motivated.

Unfortunately, now my shoes are soaked. I hope they dry out before Saturday.

Half Marathon Training: Day 1

To celebrate my 50th birthday next March, I'd been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo. However, I decided that improving my health and reaching a challenging goal would be a better choice.

So, to commemorate my half century milestone, I decided (with a little help from my friends) to sign up for a half marathon.

I'm going to keep track of my progress here, mostly as an inspiration for myself. I've read that keeping mentally focused on my goal is just as much a battle as the physical training.

Speaking of physical training, at the end of this blog entry is the 12-week training schedule that I'm following. It's meant for an absolute beginner like me. During my training, and during the marathon itself, I will follow a cycle of running for 3 minutes then walking for 2 minutes. I feel this is the most doable plan of action, since my goal is simply to finish the race without keeling over!

[Nerd note: The Chinese for 'keel over' is 弱不禁風 ruòbùjīnfēng, which literally means "too weak to stand against the wind"]

A great benefit of preparing for this goal is improving my health. So, as an added motivation, I will also keep track of my weight and waist size. If I can find a free blood pressure checker then I may add that measurement here as well.

This is embarrassing, but embarrassment can be
a great motivational tool.

Below is the 12-week training schedule that I began today, which I got from this site at Shape Magazine. The half marathon is on March 10, 2013—14 weeks away—so that gives me a little wiggle room.

How to start the new year...or not

In my case, I'm starting with a cup of coffee, and then it's off to do my laundry. Yeah, that sounds pitiful. However...

I'm thinking of going to Taipei later and attempting to see Avatar. Since all the tickets are sold out, I'm going to try to get my hands on some 黃牛票 (huáng niú piào) scalped tickets. 黃牛票 literally means "yellow cow ticket."

I've been told to look for older women hanging around the ticket area--they'll be my connection to complete the illicit transaction.

I was warned by some students that the scalper--upon seeing an ignorant wàiguórén (foreigner)--may try to charge me an exorbitant price. In order to prevent the little-old-lady from ripping me off, I was taught a useful word: 強盜 (qiángdào) Robber!

Let the adventure (and new year) begin!

----------UPDATE @ 12:00PM----------

I'm starting this year with a bang, and I don't mean firecrackers.

On the way to the laundromat I got into a traffic accident.

I honestly can't remember all the details, but I do remember that I had the green light. As I was crossing the intersection, an oncoming car was starting to turn left in front of me. I couldn't avoid him quickly enough because I was holding my laundry basket and was using only one hand to drive. My scooter glanced off the front of his car and I went down. I wasn't hurt except for a gouge in my thumb. I didn't note any damage to the guy's car except my paint scraped on his bumper.

Through the language barrier we managed to exchange information. My hands were shaking while I was writing. I tried to call the insurance company but I got an automated menu in Chinese, so I handed the phone to my accident "partner" who listened for a bit and gave up also (frustration with phone menus knows no cultural bounds).

At the time I felt it was my fault since I couldn't control my scooter well due to the laundry basket. But, I was the one going straight and should have had the right-of-way (according to my American thinking; then again, this is Taiwan). So, I now feel it was pretty much 50-50 responsibility. Taiwan's insurance is no-fault, so I guess it won't be a problem. I'm sure the ever-present traffic cameras will sort it all out.

The guy is a real estate agent. He told me his wife would call me; I'm assuming that's because her English is better, and/or she has more free time.

The sucky part is that the laundromat was just on the other side of that intersection.

Even suckier (?) is that I discovered the washers there don't work on coins but on some kind of pre-paid card that I don't even possess.

The suckiest (!) part is that, after leaving that laundromat to search for another, I found one even closer to my apartment, so I could have avoided all of this if I had just spotted that one first.

PS. I just remembered that I got my very first speeding ticket on New Year's Day, 2008. January 1st is obviously an inauspicious traffic day for me.

Sick with the flu

Last night was terrible. I had a fever and terrible body aches. I piled the blankets on and was shivering one moment, then kicking off the covers the next. I took 800mg Ibuprofen which eventually cooled me down enough to get a little sleep.

This morning my temperature didn’t feel as high, but I was exhausted, and my head had that feverish fog, and I still had the body aches. I was a little worried about pneumonia, but I didn’t have any other symptoms.

mask I went to the doctor this morning; he checked me over, determined that my lungs sounded clear, told me I had the flu, and prescribed a cocktail of medicines. Since I still had a fever he told me to stay home from work, and to wear a mask when around others.

So, here’s what the well-dressed flu victim is wearing these days.

Ugh, just writing this much has worn me out. Gonna go lie down.

In the hospital

I went to the doctor on Feb. 24th because my cold/flu had spread to my ear. The doctor diagnosed bronchitis and a middle ear infection, and gave me some medicine. I was feeling better a few days later, and thought I was cured.

Then, Saturday night I developed a high fever and found sleeping difficult. I got up on Sunday with pain in my chest when I breathed deeply, and surmised that I might have pneumonia. Whatever it was, I knew I had to see a doctor again. My friend Chyo took me to the ER around 2:00pm.

X-rays showed a shadow on my right lung, blood tests showed my white blood cell count at 28,000 (normal=9-12K), and the ER doctor confirmed that I had pneumonia. Fortunately, I had previously requested copies of my medical records from the US, and the doctors here could see that I had a life-threatening case of pneumonia back in 2001. They immediately started an IV with antibiotics and said they would admit me when a room opened up (a room paid for by the national health insurance). I ended up staying in the ER for 28 hours; finally, on Monday evening, I was transferred to a room on the 12th floor.

By Monday afternoon my fever had gone down, thankfully; I had been in a miserable fog until that time. On Tuesday my energy started coming back. My white blood cell count, however, had not yet dropped. The doctor checked my liver and kidney functions and said they were fine, so the cell count wasn't a serious concern.

I spent my birthday Thursday in the hospital, feeling pretty good, which was a relief because I had been feeling poorly since Feb. 15th. On Friday my cell count was back to normal, so all indications showed that I would probably be released that day. However, the x-rays still showed about 50% of the shadow, so the doctor advised me to stay until Monday to continue on the IV antibiotic. I'm writing this on Saturday afternoon from the 15th floor lounge, the only place with an internet connection (this is the VIP floor).

Min Sheng Hospital (敏盛綜合醫院) has provided me excellent medical care. In Taiwan it's expected that patients will have family taking care of them while admitted, much more so than in the US. I'm so grateful to Chyo who took time off work to stay with me and help me the first few days; I don't know what I would have done without him. I'm also thankful for my friends, including coworkers and students, who came to visit me and help me.

Sick

Ugh, I've been sick with a cold/flu since Sunday. My voice sounds like, well, what I imagine a sexy frog would sound like. It's my first real illness in the ten months I've been in Taiwan, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Cold medicine and herbal teas give me enough strength to go to work, but when I get home after my classes I'm completely sapped of energy. Hence, no energy to update this blog. Just writing this little bit has taken more concentration than I'm able to give. Gotta go to bed.

My first doctor's visit in Taiwan

I have bunches of photos to post, but before I do that, I just had to jot down my first experience at a doctor's office in Taiwan. I'm thankful for my coworker Matt. He's an American who speaks fluent Chinese (and Japanese...God, how I hate him, lol). He kindly walked me through the entire process today.

First of all, today is Sunday. Yes, Sunday—and I was able to see a doctor. Second, no appointment necessary; just walk right in. After filling out one tiny form and presenting my health insurance card, I was seen in about five minutes.

I went to the doctor's because of my frequent neck and back pain (from previous injuries), and the related headaches. The first person to see me felt my neck, head, and back, then took my pulse and looked at my tongue. She asked me a few questions (about exercise, headache location, etc.) then recorded the information on the computer. This is handy because I'll be able to go again by myself without having to explain in my terrible Chinese what's wrong. Plus, the information is in a central database, so I can visit any doctor on the island without having to fill out reams of medical history forms.

After the initial screening, I was laid out on a table and given a gentle yet effective massage. The doctor was able to locate the vertebrae that were compressed and/or misaligned, and massaged and manipulated my body to relieve some of the pressure. I could tell that I was very much out of alignment. I got an intense head rush when I sat up, probably because I hadn't eaten breakfast, so the staff provided some ginger candy to balance out my blood sugar.

After that, I was laid out on a machine that reminded me of a Medieval torture device. For 15 minutes it rhythmically stretched my body. It didn't hurt, but actually felt quite relaxing.

Next, I was put in a neck traction type of device for 15 minutes. I watched TV during the treatment. Following that, electric muscle stimulators were attached to my neck and lower back.

Finally, cool-temperature herbal bandages were affixed to my neck and back, and I was sent on my way with some herbal medicine to take for 7 days.

I was worked on for over an hour, more thoroughly than I had ever been treated by an American chiropractor. The cost for all of this? Only NT$150 (US$4.50!), which included the herbal medication. This low cost is because of Taiwan's national health insurance. I could never afford to get regular chiropractic treatments in the US, but at $4.50 a visit I'm going to try to get in at least twice a week.

Not a good day

Had an emotional meltdown today. Missing my kids, feeling older, terrified of dying, lack of confidence in my job, mom and sister shunning me, what-is-the-meaning-of-life questions, etc. Yeah, real mid-life crisis, complete with sobbing and not wanting to get out of bed.

I finally got up and poured out my thoughts on video. I considered sending it to those I love, just to let them know what's up. Fortunately, I thought better of that and decided to wait at least one day. After I watched the video, I felt a little better, I think because I was able to view myself from the "outside." I went to work this evening (thank God I had only one class today), and now, 10:00pm, I'm feeling better, but still depressed. At least I'm venting a bit here on my blog.

I really thought I was going crazy earlier today. Time does have a way of healing wounds. Well, that and a Smirnoff Ice. After class I had a nice chat with a fellow teacher, and he assured me that this is a normal culture shock experience, and that it would pass. In my mind I already knew that, but it was nice to get the positive feedback that I wasn't crazy.

Hopefully my feeling won't be so overwhelming in the morning. I'll see if there's any truth to Scarlett O'Hara's thoughts about 'tomorrow.'
